Genre Research: Horror

Our first genre research is horror. We chose horror because it is very similar to what we want in our film. Some camera angles, movements, and shots used in horror films are hand held camera shots, low angles, titled angles, close up, tracking or panning shot, and high angles. In these films, camera shots are used to show multiple different things. Camera shots establish a scene for the audience, shows when a character is being followed or watched, and builds up suspension for upcoming scenes. In horror films, lighting is very important for the atmosphere. The lighting controls how people feel while watching a movie. It produces tension by regulating how much of the surroundings and characters are revealed thanks to its dark atmosphere that is presented. Through the use of shadows and gloomy tones, it sets the tone and develops a tense relationship with the audience. Examples of  lighting in horror movies are usually dark and atmospheric. This is used to create an effective setting and surrounding commonly used for jump-scares. Some props used for horror movies are a chainsaw, Ouija board, video camera, and masks to hide the killers face. Many common settings for horror movies are cabins, school dorms, amusement parks, forests, cemeteries, and abandoned/ old rundown buildings. Horror films excel at employing sound to heighten tension the audience as they was events unfold onscreen. The most common sounds used when filming a horror film are diegetic sound, non-diegetic sound, sound motif, and  ambient sound. Editing in any film is important. The suspense and tension created during a dramatic and terrifying scene keeps the audience on their toes and anticipating what will happen next in horror film.  Some examples of editing used in horror films are cut aways, fade out, eye-line match, and jump cut. Some example of films in this genre would be The Conjuring, Scream, Halloween, and SAW. There are so many more examples of horror movies that contain these characteristics, but these are the most popular ones in the U.S.
