Conventions: The Widow
The film: The Widow
Camera angles/movements/shots: A lot of aerials, two-shots, and some
extreme close-up/close up. The aerial was used as an establishing shot and to show the woods and the path the van was taking. The most predominant shot used a two/ three-shot because most of the movie just showed the group together. The extreme close-up and close ups were used to show someone's expressions. Handheld shots expressed the shakiness and captured the realness, point of view and over the shoulder shots so you, the viewer, can see through the characters eyes and perspectives. low and high angles to show the paths and frustration within the group. Dolly and tracking shots showed what was going on round everyone.
COSTUMES used were rescue team uniform
LIGHTING in the beginning of the movie it was dim since they were in a cave. After that, they were in natural lighting and as the movie went on, it was dark. The movie is set in one day, so the lighting goes down as time goes by. Majority of the movie is in the dark because the real action doesn't start up until its night.
ACTING in the film was pretty good. The panic, frustration, fear and urgency were perfectly captured. The emotions and expressions were excellent.
MAKEUP in the film was minimal. Just a lot of dirt and blood.
PROPS used were cameras, a toy, clothing hanging from trees, a tablet, radio and a phone, flashlights, fire, newspaper, picture frames, haystacks, and a rescue kit. The rescuers would use these for documentation, communication, for clues and for survival.
SETTING of the film was majority in the woods. Occasionally, the rescuers were in the van, and in the beginning of the movie, they were in a cave. But most of the film was in the woods since they couldn't escape it.
Editing: Cross cutting and jump cuts.
Sound: The main source of sound was diegetic. Crunchy leaves, whistling wing and the crying really made the movie really unsettling, as if you didn't know what was to come next. The non-diegetic sounds were composed of violin music.
Elements: The elements of this film include the lighting,
the angles and makeup used.
Elements that appeal: The realism of it all, the entirety of the film had this eerie feeling. It really had you reeled in no matter how much you wanted to stop.
Elements that don't appeal: Towards the end of the movie, it lost its first-person touch to it. The movie also ended very strangely, there was little to no context as to what happened.
